About Dr. Rodriguez-Thompson
BIO: I grew up primarily in Boston, Massachusetts and consider it my home outside of North Carolina. I am proud to be from a bicultural French-Puerto Rican family and am always trying to improve my French and Spanish language abilities! Since moving to North Carolina for graduate school, I have loved getting to know the Triangle area and knew that I wanted to live here long-term and continue building community here. I live in Durham with my husband, our soon-to-be toddler, and our shih-tzu Balou.
An important value of mine is integrating culturally responsive care into therapy and recognizing the harmful role of oppressive systems on mental health. Outside of the therapy room, I am involved with community advocacy efforts around racial and economic justice. I also serve as an Outreach Representative for the USA Palestine Mental Health Network. My other loves and interests include crafting (especially embroidery and cross-stitching), playing videogames and boardgames, all things music but especially singing and curating playlists, and playing tennis.
TRAINING: I received my B.A. from Columbia University. After graduation, I worked for a couple of years as a research assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital where I worked on neuroimaging projects aimed at identifying risk factors for schizophrenia. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology within the child track from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My research focused on studying socioemotional risk factors for mental health problems in adolescents and the impact of racism-related stress on emotion regulation. During my time in graduate school, I specialized in doing psychological assessments and working with children, adolescents, and their parents. I also trained for three years at the TAP clinic, where I provided DBT services and parent-based interventions for youth anxiety and adolescent high-risk behaviors. I completed my doctoral internship at the Durham VA Medical Center, where I trained in trauma-based interventions, neuropsychological assessment, and couples therapy. I love working with people of all ages, so I am incredibly excited to be returning to TAP to work with children, teens, families, and adults.

EXPERTISE: I treat youth and adults with a range of painful experiences including anxiety, obsessions and compulsions, mood disturbances, trauma, emotional dysregulation, suicidality and self-injury, and borderline personality disorder. In addition to my extensive training in DBT and trauma-based work, I have experience treating relationship difficulties in couples when one or both partners are struggling with traumatic stress. I also have experience working with caregivers who are navigating how to respond when their children are experiencing mental health difficulties or crisis.
