LINDSEY FREEMAN, PhD

Post-Doctoral Fellow

About Dr. Freeman

BIO: I am one of the current postdoctoral fellows at the TAP clinic. I recently completed my

doctoral training at the University of Missouri, and am thrilled to be back “home” in the

Triangle Area. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband and daughter,

listening to live music, playing board games, working on jigsaw puzzles, and entertaining our

rambunctious cat.

TRAINING: I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology & Neuroscience at UNC Chapel

Hill, and then worked as a research assistant studying individuals’ experiences in early

substance use recovery following graduation. I went on to receive my PhD in Clinical Psychology

from the University of Missouri, where I largely worked with adults struggling with mood

difficulties, substance use, and/or sleep problems, and focused my research on how these

experiences can often be inter-related. Clinically, I received training in comprehensive

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and substance use

relapse prevention/ harm reduction during graduate school. I returned to UNC for my clinical

internship, where I gained further experience in Addiction Medicine and in providing individual

and group DBT. I also gained further training in evidence-based treatment for PTSD while on

internship. My clinical experiences thus far have continued to strengthen my passion for DBT – I

love that it is a flexible yet structured skills-based modality that balances compassion,

validation, and acceptance with problem-solving, practicing skills, and supporting clients in

working toward their goals. I am thrilled to be joining the TAP clinic as a postdoctoral fellow to

gain further specialized training in DBT and trauma therapies, and to expand my work to offer

behavioral parent training for parents of high-risk youth.

EXPERTISE: I work with clients who struggle with emotion regulation, anxiety, depression,

trauma/ PTSD, suicidality, self-injury, and borderline personality disorder. I also enjoy working

with adults who struggle with substance use disorders, impulsivity, or who struggle with

“behavioral addictions”, like gambling. I also have experience treating insomnia and other sleep

difficulties.

EVIDENCE-BASED THERAPIES OFFERED: DBT, CBT, Trauma Therapies, BABehavioral Parent Training

POPULATIONS SERVED:

I work with older adolescents, young adults, and adults for individual

therapy. I also serve as one of the co-leaders in the DBT Adult Group and the Brief Skills Training

Group. I do not treat children or provide family therapy.
