TAP CE is our in-house continuing education program directed by Dr. Lorie Ritschel. We strive to provide top-notch, empirically anchored training to psychologists and other mental health professionals. Most training are offered by TAP providers and are within our specified areas of expertise, though we also host events with outside trainers. Providing Neuroaffirmative Treatment: Understanding Autism as a Neurotype
In this workshop, the presenters (one of whom is autistic) will discuss characteristics of autism beyond DSM5 that clinicians should consider when working with autistic individuals (e.g., autistic learning styles, sensory profiles). Implications for treatment will be discussed, with a focus on incorporating the client’s neurotype into case conceptualization and treatment planning.
Optimizing DBT for Autistic Individuals
In this workshop, the presenters (both DBT-LBC certified clinicians, one of whom is autistic) will discuss when and how to modify DBT by honoring the needs of the autistic brain without changing the treatment or targeting autism as a problem to be solved. Implications for treatment will be discussed, with a focus on incorporating the client’s neurotype into case conceptualization. Potential modifications for both individual therapy and skills delivery will be proposed.
Ethical Considerations in Gender Affirming Mental Health Care with Trans Youth
This workshop is intended for clinicians interested in learning about ethical considerations in practicing gender-affirming mental health care with trans youth. Suitable for experienced clinicians and those new to gender-affirming care, this interactive training will incorporate didactic information, case examples, and clinician-led questions to build knowledge and explore ethical considerations. Participants will explore nuanced clinical scenarios involving young people (e.g., adolescents and young adults), their parents/consenting adults, and collaborating healthcare providers. Options for navigating common challenges, including local and federal laws restricting gender-affirming healthcare for minors, will be addressed.
Legal and Ethical Problems in Community Practice: How to Spot Them, Manage Them, and Survive Them
This workshop is for clinicians who want practical information and advice about handling high risk, high stress situations that arise in community-based practice. The presentation begins with a two-hour review of North Carolina law and regulations and the APA Ethics Code, presented by two attorneys who frequently defend psychologists facing Board complaints. This is followed by a one-hour discussion of two vignettes that raise serious legal and ethical issues; two North Carolina psychologists will join the attorneys to discuss these cases.
